India’s New Airline Refund Rules to Benefit UAE Flyers
New Delhi’s aviation regulator is working to simplify and speed up ticket cancellations, name corrections, and refunds for passengers — both domestic and international. The proposed changes could be particularly beneficial for the large number of UAE residents who regularly fly to India.
Under the draft Civil Aviation Requirement (CAR), the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) proposes a 48-hour free cancellation window for passengers who book directly through airline websites. Travellers will be able to cancel or modify their tickets within two days of purchase without paying extra charges, except for any fare differences, as long as the flight departs at least five days (domestic) or fifteen days (international) later.
The draft also requires all airlines to process refunds within 21 working days — even for tickets booked via travel agents or third-party platforms. Airlines will remain responsible for issuing refunds, closing a long-standing gap that often delays reimbursements when tickets are booked through intermediaries.
Passengers who spot spelling errors in their names can correct them within 24 hours of booking at no additional cost, if purchased on an airline’s official website. This move aims to reduce unnecessary fees and stress caused by minor typographical issues. In the event of medical emergencies, the DGCA has suggested that travellers be offered a full refund or travel credit if they are forced to cancel their flight.
Feedback on the draft rules is open to the public, airlines, and agents until November 30. If approved, the revised regulations will align India’s air travel policies with leading global standards, offering more flexibility and confidence to UAE–India flyers.
