Barefoot Mallu Runs 115km to Raise Awareness for Ocean Conservation

Indian expat and ultra-marathoner Aakash Nambiar, popularly known as the ‘Barefoot Mallu,’ completed a grueling 115km barefoot run from Hatta to Dubai’s Mushrif Park to promote ocean conservation.

The 36-year-old Keralite, a passionate advocate for environmental causes, undertook this challenge to highlight the importance of protecting marine ecosystems. “The UAE has made remarkable progress in ocean conservation, from preserving coral reefs to expanding mangrove forests. It’s now our responsibility to contribute by keeping our oceans clean,” Nambiar emphasized.

A Run for the Oceans

For this initiative, he partnered with Azraq, a Dubai-based nonprofit dedicated to marine conservation. “Through this collaboration, I aim to educate, motivate, and activate communities to restore coral reefs, reduce marine debris, and protect marine life,” he added.

Nambiar began his journey at the Oman-Dubai border in Hatta at 6 AM and completed the 115km distance in 17 hours, reaching Mushrif Park at 11 PM.

A History of Purpose-Driven Runs

This isn’t the first time Nambiar has used his endurance challenges to promote important causes. In 2023, he ran 104km across Dubai to support the COP28 climate summit. During the pandemic in 2020, he ran from Abu Dhabi to Dubai to encourage a healthier lifestyle. His marathons have also taken him to Sri Lanka, Spain, Portugal, and India, including Kashmir, where he aimed to promote tourism.

Beyond the environmental message, Nambiar believes barefoot running enhances foot strength and posture while fostering a deeper connection to nature.

“Running barefoot symbolizes our bond with nature and our duty to protect it. Let’s take steps toward a healthier planet and thriving marine life for future generations,” he said.

Nambiar, who works in an advertising agency, continues to inspire through his endurance challenges, proving that small actions can lead to a big impact on the environment.
