A recent report by Indiaspora, in collaboration with The Boston Consulting Group, underscores the Indian diaspora’s significant contributions to the UAE’s socio-economic landscape. With an estimated population of 3.9 million, Indians in the UAE have played a pivotal role in key sectors such as technology, healthcare, education, and business, despite facing ongoing challenges, particularly among blue-collar workers.
Indiaspora’s Report on the Indian Diaspora
Indiaspora, a non-profit organization comprising global Indian-origin leaders, launched its report, Indian Diaspora in the UAE: From Ancient Legacy to Modern Triumphs, in Abu Dhabi during the Forum for Good conference. The study highlights the community’s role in shaping the UAE’s economy and global influence.
The Indian expatriate population has expanded from around 5,000 in 1975 to 3.9 million today, making up nearly 30% of the UAE’s population. The report notes that the diaspora’s increasing presence supports the Gulf Cooperation Council’s (GCC) international relations, further enhancing their global visibility and influence. As the UAE transitions to a knowledge-based economy, Indian expertise in AI, technology, and fintech strengthens its competitive edge.
Indiaspora’s Growing Engagement in the UAE
Sanjeev Joshipura, Indiaspora’s executive director, emphasized the UAE’s importance in their global initiatives. “The UAE is one of our seven core focus countries. Over the past four years, we have actively engaged in the region and now aim to expand our presence not only in the UAE but also across the GCC and MENA regions. Our platform enables collaboration and community engagement in fields such as entrepreneurship, philanthropy, trade, geopolitics, healthcare, arts, culture, cuisine, AI, and literature.”
Economic and Cultural Contributions
According to Sesh Iyer, Managing Director and Senior Partner at BCG X, the report showcases the remarkable economic impact of the Indian diaspora. “The relationship of trust between India and the UAE, along with the immense trade value, underscores the Indian community’s role. Indian-founded companies are at the forefront of innovation in AI, blockchain, and crypto, contributing to a market worth $50 billion,” he said.
The education sector also reflects the diaspora’s influence, with over 400,000 students enrolled in Indian-run schools. In healthcare, 25,000 Indian doctors and 55,000 Indian nurses form an essential part of the UAE’s medical workforce.
The UAE’s forward-thinking leadership has fostered a business-friendly environment, making it an attractive destination for Indian professionals and entrepreneurs. The country’s establishment of an AI ministry in 2017 exemplifies its commitment to technological progress.
Evolving Migration Trends
Historically, the majority of Indian expatriates in the UAE hailed from Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Andhra Pradesh. However, recent years have seen increasing migration from northern states, adding to the community’s regional diversity.
While the UAE seldom grants citizenship to expatriates, visa policies have become more accommodating, with initiatives such as the golden visa streamlining residency processes. Many Indians are drawn to the country’s ease of business, cultural synergies, and high living standards.
Challenges for Blue-Collar Workers
Despite improvements in labor conditions, challenges persist for blue-collar workers, including workplace safety concerns, long hours, and high living costs. Limited access to affordable healthcare and education also impacts their ability to settle in the UAE for the long term.
Prominent Indian-Owned Businesses in the UAE
Indian entrepreneurs have established some of the UAE’s most successful business groups, including:
- Nikai Group of Companies – Founded by Mr. Shahdadpuri, this firm operates in 52 countries and is a leading OEM manufacturer.
- Lulu Group – Established by Yusuff Ali, Lulu is the largest retailer in the GCC, generating $7.3 billion in annual revenue.
- Landmark Group – Founded by Micky Jagtiani, it is a major player in the retail and hospitality sectors.
- Joyalukkas – A prominent jewelry brand founded by Joy Alukkas.
Healthcare and Philanthropy
The Indian diaspora has made significant strides in healthcare. Entrepreneurs such as Dr. Azad Moopen (Aster Healthcare), Dr. Shamsheer Vayalil (VPS Healthcare), and Dr. Zulekha Daud (Zulekha Healthcare) have set new standards in medical excellence.
Beyond business, the community is actively involved in humanitarian efforts. In January 2024, Dr. Vayalil announced an initiative to sponsor 50 life-saving heart surgeries for children, showcasing the diaspora’s commitment to social causes.
A Future of Continued Impact
The report underscores the Indian diaspora’s integral role in the UAE’s evolving economic and social landscape. As the UAE continues to grow as a global hub, the contributions of its Indian community will remain vital in shaping its future. The blend of economic collaboration, cultural integration, and innovation cements the strong ties between India and the UAE, promising further advancements in the years to come.
