Dubai’s Young Karting Star Nathan Kappen Eyes F1 Dream

At just 13 years old, Nathan Joseph Kappen is making waves in the world of karting. While most kids his age are finishing homework and school projects, Nathan is clocking speeds of up to 120 km/h in professional kart races.

Based in Dubai, this promising Malayali racer has quickly risen through the ranks. In just three years since he discovered his passion, Nathan — fondly known as Nat — has won the UAE Rotax Max Challenge and the Middle East and Africa Championship. This November, he will represent the UAE at the prestigious Grand Finals in Bahrain.

A Dream Fueled by Speed

Nathan’s dream is clear: to one day become a Formula 1 driver or compete in world-renowned endurance races like Le Mans. “I aspire to be an F1 driver or race in Le Mans — one of the two, but especially F1,” he said.

Currently racing for Mumbai Falcons in the Middle East and for the DPK Racing Factory Team in Europe (owned by F1 legend Fernando Alonso), Nat is already gaining international exposure.

A Late but Promising Start

Interestingly, Nathan began karting at the age of 10 — considered late in the sport. His father, Thommen Kappen, a businessman from Thodupuzha, recalls taking him to a rental karting venue in Dubai. “He found his spark instantly. A team there suggested we put him into training, and that’s how it all started,” he said.

Nathan’s mother, Thanu, a chartered accountant from Kanjirappally, and his younger sister Kiara are his biggest supporters.

Rising Through the Ranks

Starting in the mini category (ages 10–12), Nathan competed in nine races in his debut season and finished 7th overall. His tall build (182 cm) soon made him move to the junior category, where despite the added wind resistance, he began to dominate races. He won events in Bengaluru and the UAE with impressive 8–10 second margins.

With the next season beginning in September, Nathan is preparing to step into the senior category — a significant milestone in his journey.

Proud Roots and a Bright Future

Though born and raised in Dubai, Nathan proudly embraces his Malayali roots. “Before every race, I get calls from my family in Kerala. It’s a big part of who I am,” he shared.

With his talent, dedication, and family support, Nathan Kappen is firmly on track toward a future in motorsport’s highest levels — and perhaps even Formula 1.
