Meet Dubai’s Shaholia Family: Celebrating Diwali for 76 Years

Dubai’s neighborhoods are bright with lights and bustling with celebrations as the Diwali season brings families together in vibrant festivities. Among these, the Shaholia family stands out, celebrating their 76th Diwali in Dubai. Their story intertwines rich traditions with a modern lifestyle that has evolved over three generations.

The Shaholia Family’s Legacy in Dubai

The family’s roots in the UAE go back to 1948, when Laxmichand Mohanlal Shaholia arrived in Dubai and established one of the first jewelry shops near the Gold Souk. Today, his grandson, Divyesh Kumar Shaholia, continues to uphold this legacy. “Our connection to the UAE is not just a business one,” Divyesh shares. “For us, Dubai is home, and Diwali is an occasion that deepens our bond with this city every year.”

In line with their heritage, the family follows a Diwali ritual of decorating their home in a sustainable way, using LED lights and reusing decorations while also refreshing their décor to add something new each year. The main living room becomes a hub for family gatherings, while balconies shine bright with indoor and outdoor lights.

A Family-Centered Celebration

Diwali for the Shaholias is a time to come together with extended family, hosting 30 to 35 relatives, including cousins and extended family members, over delicious food and gift exchanges. Last weekend, the family celebrated early, gathering for a festive meal that brought everyone together. On Diwali day itself, they keep up a cherished tradition: everyone, regardless of their work schedule, joins the family puja (prayer).

After the puja, the family continues the tradition of giving children a ‘Diwali bonus’ – a practice akin to Eidiya during Eid, where children receive money in festive envelopes. They then gather to exchange sweets and gifts before heading home.

Diwali in Dubai’s Vibrant Communities

Across Dubai, neighborhoods such as Al Mankhool, Bur Dubai, Karama, Al Nahda, and Al Barsha are aglow with decorations. Families like the Shaholias celebrate Diwali by illuminating their homes with colorful lights and fairy lights, adding to the festive spirit.

In Bur Dubai, residents observe Diwali as an auspicious time to buy gold, and the Shaholia family’s stores see loyal customers visiting, especially for 22K gold purchases. In keeping with tradition, they perform a morning puja at their Bur Dubai store, led by the elders, symbolizing prosperity and gratitude.
