Dubai-Raised Indian Footballer Mohamed Hateem Ali Makes History
Born in India and raised in Dubai, 18-year-old Mohamed Hateem Ali has made history as part of the Indian U20 football team that secured qualification for the AFC U20 Asian Cup after a 20-year gap.
Originally from Cuddalore in Tamil Nadu, Mohamed Hateem Ali moved to Dubai with his family when he was just five months old. Having spent almost his entire life in the UAE, the young footballer has developed his skills through Dubai’s football system and is now making a name for himself on the international stage.
Currently playing for Shabab Al Ahli’s U21 team, Hateem is also pursuing a Bachelor of Business Administration degree at the University of Wollongong in Dubai.
From Dubai School Football to the Indian National Team
Hateem’s football journey began at the age of six when he joined his school’s U8 team. At 11, he entered Shabab Al Ahli’s youth academy, where he steadily progressed through the U12, U13, U14, U15, U16, U17 and U19 teams before reaching the U21 squad.
During his time at the club, he achieved the distinction of finishing as the UAE FA tournament’s top scorer on three consecutive occasions.
His consistent performances eventually earned him a place in India’s U20 national football team.
Helping India Qualify After 20 Years
Hateem made his international debut against Syria and featured in all three of India’s qualifying matches against Syria, Uzbekistan and Bangladesh.
He was also part of the Indian squad that secured a convincing 3-0 victory over Bangladesh in Tashkent on September 6, 2026, helping the country qualify for the 2027 AFC U20 Asian Cup in China.
The achievement marked India’s return to the continental tournament after a 20-year absence.
For Hateem, representing India and contributing to this historic qualification has been one of the proudest moments of his football career.
Balancing Football and University Studies
Alongside his football commitments, Hateem is studying business administration at the University of Wollongong in Dubai.
Balancing university classes, regular training sessions, club matches and international duties requires considerable discipline and time management.
He also credits his family for supporting his football ambitions from an early age, including taking him to training sessions, attending matches and encouraging him to continue his education.
A Bigger Dream: Playing for India’s Senior Team
With the AFC U20 Asian Cup scheduled to take place in China from March 24 to April 10, 2027, Hateem is focused on preparing for the tournament while continuing his development at Shabab Al Ahli.
His long-term ambition is to represent India’s senior national football team.
From playing school football in Dubai to helping India achieve a historic qualification, Mohamed Hateem Ali’s journey highlights the growing contribution of UAE-raised Indian talent to Indian sports.
At just 18, the Tamil Nadu-origin footballer has already achieved an important milestone, with potentially many more ahead.
